OS X Quick Tip: Send HUGE Attachments with iChat

quicktip.jpgSending large files to your friends can be a real pain. Just try emailing your friend a 20 mb files. Or 100 mb. Or 1 Gb.

It ain’t gonna happen.

But…if your friend is a Mac user, it’s no problem at all.

In iChat, you can send files very easily.

Just got to:
Buddies > Send File…

You can send attachments of ANY SIZE. It doesn’t matter how big the file is…it will get there.

This can be particularly useful for sending extremely large attachments. As long as you can be patient while the file transfers it’ll make it, no matter how big the file is. This is a much easier way to send your friends large files than using a pay service, or uploading the file onto your own server then allowing them to download it.

  1. if you have a isp with 24h time out, you’re well advised to reconnect both sides just before the send process if you are planning to send a gig directly.

  2. Somewhere around 4.6 GB of transfered data, iChat freezes on both ends of the connection. Be warned, but its a pretty small limitation.
