Going Rogue: incase Nylon Messenger Bag

Table of Contents

About a week ago, I bought a new incase backpack for my 15-inch MBP. I even reported the story here, because I’m just that nice of a guy. The next morning I returned it. Why?

Well, after the glow of having new stuff left me, I realized that with all its pockets and cool goodies it was still too small for what I need on a day-to-day. I carry my MBP, two Moleskine notebooks, a copy of the AP Style Guide, pens, digital recorder and business cards every day, and I wanted to add my iPad to the mix as well. The backpack was great, but it just was packed so tight with my stuff that I worried about those days when I needed to carry a little bit more. It was frustrating.

I went onto incase’s site to look for more options, and that’s when I found the Nylon Messenger Bag. Although I love their more expensive messenger bags, I have no need for bike pump storage; this is just what I take when I’m leaving the house. I wanted storage for my iPad and laptop, and this has it. It also has ample storage for all of my other crap, including the front pocket for my iPhone and an inner pocket for my pens and small items. Really, it’s got room for all of my stuff and then some, making it perfect for day-to-day duties. Plus, it wasn’t too bad on the pocketbook. Just $69.95, which was a touch cheaper than the backpack.

Now it does have a few flaws. First, there are just two inner pockets: One for an iPad, one for a laptop. I was kind of hoping for a divider or separator, but it’s just not there. That’s not a bad thing if you’re carrying lots of books like I am, but it’s something to consider. Also, the front pocket underneath the flap can be a bit difficult to get into. It’s like the zipper is a touch narrower than the pocket itself.

Overall, I really like the bag. Hopefully it works well for me in my day-to-day travels, but only time will tell.
