Flipboard Makes Magazines Personal

I have a very strict morning routine. 6:00 am hits the clock and I pivot out of the bed to my right, put my feet on the floor, and grab my iPhone with my right hand. Once I disconnect it from the wall, I go through my ritual: e-mail, Facebook, Twitter. Then I get up, feed the dogs, and I go on about my day.

Since I got my iPhone 4, I’ve noticed that Twitter loads slower from my iPhone. I’m not sure if it’s the official Twitter app or the iPhone itself, but it’s irritating. When it comes time to load up a pic or two, it seems to take forever, which makes me frustrated. Not a good way to start your day.

Yesterday, a new app called Flipboard [iTunes link] made its way onto the iPad app store, and I gotta say, it’s changed things for me. It’s just amazing.

The video above does a great job of explaining it, but in case you don’t like watching movies, here’s the deets. Flipboard is a personal magazine that takes your Twitter and Facebook feeds and paginates them in such a way that it looks like you’re reading a magazine. Just like the real thing, you flip each page to progress forward. But unlike iBooks, the Flipboard page folds in half, creating a different kind of animation.

The resulting feed just feels brilliant. Remember that feeling the first time you held an iPad in your hands and you really felt the web in your hands? It sounded ridiculous when Steve Jobs brought it up at the announcement, but once you tried it, you knew what he meant. It’s like that now for Facebook and Twitter with Flipboard. Your friends come alive on the page unlike the typical web experience. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s just spectacular. Better yet, it’s free.

Go ahead and give it a shot. If you have an iPad, and you’re a Twitter and Facebook fan, this is the app for you.
