Google Pad? Oh That Should Sell Like Hotcakes

I’m a fan of Google. I use Gmail all the time, Google Maps is my co-pilot, and I use Google Reader and Alerts to get info for this very website. What I don’t like however, are Google’s other software, Chrome and Android. I can’t get used to Chrome, and Android just does nothing for me. It’s like dating a really hot chick who can only talk about potato pancakes. Sure, she’s fun to take around and show off to your friends, but you end up wanting to smother yourself with a pillow every time she opens her mouth.

But enough about my ex.

Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Tip your waitress.

CNNMoney is reporting that Google is working on a tablet of their own, which would run on the Chrome OS. From the article:

The tablet running Google Chrome OS would also include a virtual keyboard at the bottom of the screen or a keyboard that could be opened in a separate window that could be placed in different areas of the screen. Applications would be placed at the bottom edge of the screen and could be opened with an upward dragging motion.

When Google first announced that it was building an operating system, the company said it was focusing on the netbook market. Though Chrome OS’ developers said they are still primarily focused on netbooks, the operating system “could eventually scale to a wide variety of devices,” including an iPad-like tablet computer.

“Google Chrome OS is still in development and we are constantly experimenting with various user interfaces to determine what designs would produce the best user experience,” said a Google spokesman.

A lot of people criticize Apple for having such harsh controls over their hardware and not allowing anyone to install their OS onto just any old computer, but this is one of those instances where it makes sense. Ever play with an HTC-build Google G1? Maybe you have a Droid and you love that battery cover that just falls off whenever you pull the phone out of your pocket? Apple controls the hardware so they get quality control in the mix as well. Google, not so much. This tablet may have the best OS in the world and dominate over the iPad, but if it falls apart in your hands, what’s the point?

This thing might be coming out later this year, but who really knows. Until it does, I’ll reserve judgment.

  1. Well criticising Google for someone else’s design fault is a bit off. Anyways, it won’t fly until they have enough developer momentum going forward to make it a worthwhile purchase. It’s coming, no doubt about it and it will sell to all those who see Apple as a threat but conveniently give Google a pass for doing much the same thing as Apple. Go figure.
They also only have to stay ahead of Microturd’s promised Windows 7 platform to be successful. Apple meantime will make hay while everyone else scrambles around making sense of the resource hungry, battery hurting, traditional desktop os slab formula that has so far failed to ignite any sort of market.
I remember when the first iMacs were released – they sold boatloads and the iPad will be much the same imo.

  2. Fring has one major point: You cannot blame Google for hardware failures, that’s exactly the same as saying “Windows made the latch on my laptop Battery break!” These companies are pursuing a wider audience than Apple can or will. Now, to those who say Apple is more because of the hardware: BS. Apple machine use much the same Hardware companies as standard Windows machines. Their mobos are outsourced to the same factories in Mexico and China, their vid-cards, screens, hard drives, disc drives, etc are all parts designed by the same companies. Apple maintains its exclusivity by denying people access which furthers the idea that their is something magical under their hoods: there really isn’t. They jsut use the same parts over and over and over, thus allowing them to build to specific parts, versus the versatility and wider availability that Windows, Linux, Chrome, Droid, etc etc provides.

Don’t be fooled by the Metallic glare from the sun, it isn’t shining, it’s trying to blind you: and it is clearly succeeding.

  3. Seriously dude, care to take your bias out of this article for one second? Google is a nice alternative to Apple, that’s it. The Phones are cheaper, are available on all networks and offer a much more open platform. The Google Pad or whatever it is called will probably be much cheaper too. Sorry, not all of us have the money to dish out to be cool Apple Hipsters.

  4. i have searched and searched the net but nothing so im asking does anyone know where icanbuy a google pad please let me know thanks
